Enniscrone is one of the most visually dramatic links courses in Ireland – a place where nature set the stage long before golf arrived. Towering dunes, some the largest in Europe, frame holes that weave through valleys, plateaus and rumpled linksland beside Killala Bay.
This is not subtle golf. Enniscrone is big, bold and endlessly memorable. Drives play from elevated tees into rolling fairways that twist between dunes. Approaches often climb to perched greens or fall into natural hollows that gather misses.
The routing balances exhilaration and challenge. Some holes invite attack; others demand restraint and placement. The back nine, redesigned by Donald Steel, brings a refined strategic element while preserving the course’s wild character.
When the sun shines, it feels joyous. When the wind blows, it becomes formidable. Either way, Enniscrone delivers a pure links experience few courses can match.

A thrilling strategic test. Use elevation to shape shots and take advantage of downwind opportunities. Aggression can pay off, but only with control.
Focus on positioning from the tee. Blind shots are common – commit to targets and trust your line. Missing on the correct side of greens is key.
Enjoy the spectacle and play conservatively. Choose clubs for control over length. Some holes are demanding, so steady golf beats heroic attempts.
9-10 – smooth and quick in dry weather
Major defence. Coastal breezes affect club selection on nearly every hole.
Generally relaxed but can slow in peak visitor periods
Opening tee shot is playable but the scale of the dunes quickly sets the tone
Friendly and modern with expansive bay views
The par-5 4th is unforgettable – a sweeping drive through dunes to a rising fairway and elevated green. The par-3 15th, framed by towering sand hills, is both beautiful and exacting.
Typical west coast Irish conditions – changeable and breezy.
Best months May–September.
Firm summer turf creates true running links golf.
