Trump Doonbeg is a dramatic modern links laid out along a stretch of Atlantic shoreline in west Clare. Originally designed by Greg Norman in 2002 and later refined by Martin Hawtree, the course embraces the natural contours of 100-foot dunes, sweeping beaches, and rugged grassland. It’s both strategic and scenic – the routing weaves in and out of dune corridors, with ocean views from 16 of 18 holes. Several tee shots are blind or partially obscured, while the firm, rumpled fairways demand control rather than raw power. The 1st hole is a spectacular par-5 starting beside the beach. The 14th, a short par-3 played toward the surf, is unforgettable. While luxurious in its surroundings, the course remains authentic to true links character – wind-driven, fast-running, and visually dramatic. The five-star lodge and spa elevate the experience further. It’s a destination course built for international visitors – and a rewarding one at that. Bold, beautiful, and increasingly refined, Doonbeg is one of Ireland’s most photogenic and comfortable links rounds.

Caddy guide

Recommended – helpful for navigating blind shots and deceptive lines

Buggies

Available with medical exemption; primarily a walking course

Work the ball both ways and trust your yardages into sloped greens. Key challenge is committing to lines in wind – mental clarity pays off.

Use conservative strategies off the tee and don’t chase pins. Aim for centre of greens and rely on short game to save strokes. Caddy input is gold.

A scenic and enjoyable round even for less experienced golfers. Play shorter tees, stay away from the beach, and soak in the setting. One of Ireland’s most user-friendly links for high handicaps.

Green speed

10 – quick, smooth, and slightly contoured

Wind

Atlantic gusts often from the southwest – affects strategy on nearly every hole. Shifting breezes change the course daily.

Pace of play

Well managed – spaced tee times and caddies help maintain rhythm

Nerves on the first tee

Moderate – you’re starting a par-5 along the ocean with hotel guests watching, but the fairway is wide and welcoming

Clubhouse

Upscale lodge with spa, fine dining, and full-service facilities – polished but relaxed

The 1st is an iconic par-5 beside Doughmore Beach. The 14th is a dramatic, short par-3 framed by sea and sand. The 9th plays blind to a green nestled in the dunes. The closing stretch offers risk-reward chances and cinematic views.

True Atlantic conditions – changeable, breezy, and fresh. Rain showers can roll in quickly, but sun breaks often follow. Spring and summer are ideal, though autumn light can be spectacular.
