The European Club is unlike any other. Designed, owned, and continually refined by Pat Ruddy, it sits on a stretch of rugged dunes in County Wicklow, 40 miles south of Dublin. Opened in 1993, the course was built with no committee and no compromise – just pure vision and a desire to create Ireland’s most exhilarating links. It delivers. The fairways are tight, the rough brutal, and the green complexes devilishly tricky. Ruddy added two extra par-3s, giving the course 20 holes – though most play the standard 18. The par-4 7th hugs the sea with a green cut into the dunes, while the 12th is a monstrous par-4 often into a gale. Tiger Woods once shot 67 here and called it “the best links course he’d ever played.” Wind is a near-constant factor, and the bunkers are steep, riveted, and ruthless. The course is constantly evolving – Ruddy still tweaks it. The atmosphere is purist, the views spectacular, and the challenge very real. It’s a course that bites, but leaves a lasting impression. Unique, tough, and essential.

Caddy guide

Highly recommended – blind shots, subtle reads, and intense wind make local help invaluable

Buggies

Not permitted

One of the toughest tests in Ireland. Embrace the wind and don’t force scores. Shot-shaping and creative recovery play are essential. Stay mentally sharp.

A thrilling but punishing ride. Play forward tees, avoid hero shots, and bring plenty of golf balls. Forget the score and savour the experience.

Only for the adventurous. Stunning scenery and unforgettable moments, but this course will punish poor shots. Enjoy it for what it is – a wild ride.

Green speed

10 – slick and firm, with brutal drop-offs

Wind

Almost always present – coastal gales can change hole strategy daily. No two rounds play the same.

Pace of play

Well managed – the course is serious, but tee times are well spaced

Nerves on the first tee

High – the remote setting, reputation, and demanding opener combine for a dramatic start

Clubhouse

Rustic and welcoming – full of Ruddy family charm and photos of legends

The 12th is a brutal par-4 often into the wind – long, narrow, and brutal. The 7th is a beautiful, sweeping par-4 running along the sea. The 14th is a monstrous par-5 with one of the longest greens in Europe.

Exposed and changeable – sea mists, strong winds, and sun can all arrive in a single loop. Spring and early summer offer the best light and turf. Always bring waterproofs.
