Swinley Forest is one of England’s most cherished heathland courses – understated, private and deeply admired by those who know it. Laid out through fragrant pine and heather, it offers a tranquil yet tactically rich round where subtlety always beats strength.

Designed by Harry Colt, the course is a masterclass in strategic architecture. Fairways appear generous but ideal angles matter. Heather is the principal hazard, penal without being unfair. Greens are beautifully contoured, rewarding thoughtful placement and a confident putting stroke.

Swinley does not overwhelm with length or drama. Instead, it reveals its quality through nuance – clever bunkering, natural movement in the land and a routing that flows effortlessly through the forest.

It is a course connoisseurs adore. Every hole feels considered. Every shot asks a quiet question.

Rare – walking course

A chess match. Shape tee shots to preferred angles and attack when pins allow. Precision irons and putting are decisive.

Play within yourself. Keep the ball short of heather lines and aim for centre greens. Patience produces good scores.

Playable if sensible lines are chosen. Avoid heather at all costs and focus on steady progression hole by hole.

Wind

Less influential than links courses due to tree cover

Classic and understated with old-world charm

The par-3 10th is iconic – a beautiful one-shotter played over heather to a perfectly framed green. The short par-4 6th tempts aggression but punishes poor placement.

Typically playable year-round thanks to free-draining heathland turf.

Spring and early autumn are particularly special.

Rarely closed due to weather.
