The Strand Course at Portstewart Golf Club is one of Ireland’s great modern links – wild, undulating, and unforgettable. Redesigned in 1992 by Des Giffin, the layout punches through gigantic dunes along the Atlantic coast, overlooking the River Bann and Donegal hills beyond. The front nine is nothing short of breathtaking – a dramatic procession of rollercoaster fairways, elevated tees, and tight landing areas carved through towering dune corridors. The 1st hole alone – a downhill par-4 with panoramic views – is a contender for the best opening hole in Irish golf. While the front nine steals the headlines, the back nine plays over more open terrain with equally strong hole design and a few more birdie chances. The greens are firm, slick, and often perched, requiring touch and control. With wind a near-constant factor, it’s a test of nerve and creativity. The course hosted the 2017 Irish Open, where Jon Rahm claimed victory with a stunning 24-under par, cementing its status among Europe’s elite. It’s less famous than its neighbours, but every bit as thrilling – and arguably more spectacular.
