The West Links at North Berwick is one of the most beloved courses in world golf – a joyful and unpredictable ride along the Firth of Forth that fuses ancient charm with modern playability. Established in 1832, it’s the 13th oldest golf club in the world, and still plays across the same stretch of seaside turf, right through the town and alongside the beach. What makes it truly iconic are its template holes – including the Redan (15th), a par-3 design copied globally, and the 13th (“Pit”), where a stone wall cuts across the green. The routing is an out-and-back, with the front nine heading east toward Bass Rock and the back nine returning along the shore. Expect blind shots, stone walls, burns, shared fairways, and firm, fast greens. Despite the modest length, it’s no pushover – coastal wind, quirky bounces, and tight turf make it a real test. But North Berwick isn’t about score – it’s about soul. Few courses deliver more smiles per hole. It’s a must-play, not just in Scotland, but globally.

Bring touch and creativity. You won’t need driver on every hole, but shotmaking is key. Greens are subtle and fast – stay under the hole and embrace the odd bounce.
Play for position. The course gives you space, but it punishes poor angles. Trust your yardages and enjoy the quirks – this is golf at its most characterful.
Forgiving in distance, but play forward tees. Don’t chase flags. Soak in the views, take photos, and let the architecture do the entertaining. A very playable challenge.
9 – fast and true, even in coastal breeze
Prevailing off the Firth from the west or southwest. Intensifies as you return home on the back nine.
Well managed, but popular – expect 4:15–4:30 rounds. Marshals maintain good flow.
Historic and public – first tee sits right beside the beach path and town. Expect a few spectators and camera shutters.
Elegant and traditional – with upstairs bar overlooking the 18th green and Bass Rock
The 13th (“Pit”) features a stone wall guarding a sunken green. The 15th (“Redan”) is the most copied par-3 in golf, sloping away from right to left. The 18th returns dramatically to town, between walls and beside footpaths.
Dry for a Scottish links – east coast weather brings crisp, cool mornings, steady breezes, and long, glowing evenings. July–September offers peak playability.
