Murcar Links sits just north of Royal Aberdeen yet holds its own as one of Scotland’s sternest and most authentic links tests. Routed through towering dunes and natural valleys, it offers a feeling of isolation and immersion in true links terrain.

This is a course that asks for control from the first swing. Fairways are rumpled and framed by thick rough and revetted bunkers. Greens are subtly contoured and often slightly elevated, placing a premium on precise approaches.

There is a rhythm to Murcar – periods of opportunity followed by sequences of real examination. The outward nine works through the dunes with constant changes in direction, while the inward nine becomes more exposed, where wind and positioning dictate scoring.

Murcar rarely flatters. It rewards disciplined ball-striking and smart course management. Those who try to overpower it usually leave humbled.

Buggies

Limited and weather dependent

A superb ball-striker’s course. Shape shots to hold fairways and control trajectory into greens. Patience pays off.

Prioritise position over distance. Avoid fairway bunkers at all costs and play for safe green targets.

Challenging but playable with restraint. Choose conservative clubs from the tee and focus on advancing the ball sensibly.

Green speed

9.5-10 – firm and true links surfaces

Wind

Major factor. Often stronger on the inward nine.

Pace of play

Generally steady and well managed

Nerves on the first tee

A demanding opening hole that immediately sets expectations

Clubhouse

Traditional and understated with a strong golfing atmosphere

The par-4 9th is a standout – a drive from elevation into a valley before a testing uphill approach. The par-3 15th, played across dunes to a well-guarded green, is equally memorable.

Classic northeast Scotland conditions – cool, breezy and changeable.

Best months May–September.

Wind direction can transform the course day-to-day.
