Machrihanish Dunes is one of the most natural and sustainable golf courses ever built – laid out entirely within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with only seven tees and greens disturbed during construction. Designed by David McLay Kidd (of Bandon Dunes fame), it opened in 2009 and has quickly become known as “The World’s Most Natural Golf Course.” The routing zigzags through tall dunes and untouched land just south of the Old Course at Machrihanish. Expect blind shots, bumpy fairways, unexpected angles, and greens nestled into the land like they’ve always been there. It’s quirky, hard-edged, and spectacularly wild. The wind dictates your game here – more than most places – and club selection is often a guess. The course rewards creativity and bravery, especially on approach shots to undulating, fast greens. It’s not manicured – it’s raw, elemental, and completely authentic. A true adventure for links lovers who want to experience golf as nature intended. Add in the nearby Ugadale Hotel and the vibe is total immersion.

Embrace the unpredictability. You’ll rarely have a flat stance, and the wind adds spice. Course management and patience will beat power and frustration.
Play conservatively and keep expectations realistic. The course can feel wild, but it’s fair if you stay calm. Use the ground to shape shots and avoid forced carries.
This is an adventure, not a scorecard day. Enjoy the ride, play safe lines, and lean on your caddie or playing partner for guidance. The views are spectacular.
9 – firm and fast, with natural slopes and movement
Major factor – sea winds shift daily, often from southwest. Club selection changes hole to hole.
Moderate – natural layout and walking requirement means steady rhythm, not fast rounds
Rustic and relaxed. No grand gallery – just dunes, sky, and possibility
Small on-course facility, with full amenities and dining at nearby Ugadale Hotel
The 5th is a rollercoaster par-5 threading between dunes, with a wild green site. The 8th is a beautiful, blind par-3 set into natural folds. The 14th hugs the beach with dramatic elevation changes and views across to Islay.
West coast – windy, wet at times, but breathtaking. Spring and early autumn offer firm turf and golden light. Expect rain showers and be prepared – it’s worth it.
