Lahinch is one of the most storied and beloved links courses in Ireland – often referred to as the “St Andrews of Ireland” thanks to its unique mix of tradition, drama, and eccentricity. The course was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1894, and later reimagined by Alister MacKenzie – the genius behind Augusta National. Today, Martin Hawtree’s refinements have preserved that legacy while adding modern nuance. The round begins by climbing into the dunes before plunging into linksland filled with blind shots, natural contours, and unpredictable bounces. The 5th hole, “The Dell,” is an iconic short par-3 with a completely blind green tucked between sand hills. The 6th, “Klondyke,” features a wild second shot over a massive dune. Despite its eccentricities, Lahinch is fair and deeply rewarding. The front nine is packed with drama, while the back nine – especially from 13 onward – offers a more classical stretch of beautifully flowing holes. It’s hosted the Irish Open and remains a spiritual pilgrimage for links lovers. There’s nothing else quite like it.

Caddy guide

Highly recommended – blind shots, local lines, and hidden dangers make a caddy invaluable

Buggies

Not permitted

An exhilarating test of imagination and control. Embrace the oddities, trust your yardages, and take your medicine when required. Keep the ball under the wind and respect MacKenzie’s greens.

Play safe lines and accept the unpredictability. Focus on ball position and course management rather than attacking every pin. The experience outweighs the score.

One of the most fun and scenic rounds in Ireland. Use forward tees, soak in the views, and take extra balls for the Dell and Klondyke. Don’t chase numbers – just enjoy the journey.

Green speed

10 – firm, undulating, and links-quick

Pace of play

Well managed – caddies help keep things moving despite the blind shots

Nerves on the first tee

Clubhouse

Classic links charm – elegant, welcoming, and full of golfing history

The 5th (“Dell”) is a legendary blind par-3 where the flag is visible only through a white rock marker. The 6th (“Klondyke”) has a massive dune cutting across the fairway. The 12th is a stunning par-5 running alongside the beach.

Atlantic exposure brings shifting skies, wind, and occasional mist. Summer offers the best turf conditions and sunset rounds. Always prepare for a change – even mid-hole.
