La Reserva Club is one of the newest additions to Spain’s elite golfing scene – and one of the most impressive. Opened in 2003 and designed by Cabell B. Robinson, this is big, bold golf carved through the Andalusian hills above Sotogrande. It has hosted multiple European Tour and Ladies European Tour events, thanks to its dramatic scale, immaculate conditioning, and high-level challenge. The fairways are generous, but don’t be fooled – the course defends itself with elevation changes, huge bunkers, multi-tiered greens, and long carries. Water comes into play strategically on key holes, most notably the stunning 18th. Greens are slick and contoured, and the wind, while not as wild as the coast, still plays a role. The setting is pure luxury – framed by olive trees, wild flowers, and big-sky mountain views. This is resort golf elevated to tournament standard, offering a serious test with a distinctly relaxed, modern feel. Less intimidating than Valderrama but equally premium.

A ball-striker’s course. Rewarding for those who can shape shots and manage spin on complex greens. Choose the right tees and take on the slopes with conviction.

Use the width of the fairways – there’s room to play, but be cautious around the greens. Approach shots need solid distance control. Pick smart lines and avoid short-siding.

Playable and forgiving off the tee. Use forward tees and focus on enjoying the scale and setting. Don’t chase distance – manage your way around and you’ll have a great round.

11 – fast, pure, and championship-ready

Less exposed than coastal courses, but elevation adds complexity – especially on approaches

Pace of play

Nerves on the first tee

Clubhouse

Modern, sleek, and high-end – stylish dining and relaxed luxury throughout

The 18th is unforgettable – a sweeping par-4 playing downhill toward a lake-guarded green in front of the clubhouse terrace. The 8th, a dramatic uphill par-5, offers risk-reward options. The 11th, a short par-3 over a ravine, tests accuracy and nerve.

Dry, sunny, and reliable year-round. Cooler than coastal courses in summer due to elevation. Spring and autumn are perfect. Winter play is excellent on firm turf.
