Designed by James Braid and opened in 1919, the King’s Course is widely considered one of the finest inland courses in the world. Nestled in the rolling Perthshire hills, it offers a dramatic contrast to the links courses of Scotland’s coasts. The layout is classic Braid – intelligent, flowing, and demanding both power and guile. Elevation changes, hidden bunkers, and contoured fairways shape every hole, with panoramic views over the Ochil Hills and Gleneagles estate. The 5th (“Het Girdle”) is a signature par-3 across a vast natural bowl, while the 13th and 18th are formidable par-4s with tight drives and demanding approaches. The turf is firm and springy, the greens pure and sloping. This is not a brute-force course – it rewards shaping shots, thoughtful lines, and restraint off the tee. Despite its resort setting, the King’s has serious pedigree, having hosted the Curtis Cup and many high-level amateur events. Every round feels elevated – a walk through Scottish golfing heritage, surrounded by pure air and timeless design.

Plot your way round. The course will penalise overly aggressive play – driver isn’t always the play. Pay attention to uphill/downhill lies and elevation into greens.
It’s all about avoiding trouble. Stay centre fairway and play for heart-of-green targets. The course gives opportunities if you manage your round sensibly.
Beautiful and challenging – but friendly from forward tees. Bring your camera and enjoy the walk. Play safe and let the setting do the talking.
10 – fast, smooth, and subtly sloping
Minimal – sheltered inland setting means calm or light breeze most days
Excellent – resort-managed tee times and starter team keep things moving
Moderate – historic setting and often a small audience from the clubhouse, but fair opening hole eases you in
Elegant, five-star experience – world-class locker rooms, terrace bar, and views across the estate
The 5th (“Het Girdle”) is a breathtaking downhill par-3 into a natural amphitheatre. The 13th is a long, demanding par-4 with a tough drive and uphill approach. The 18th finishes in classic Braid style – uphill, sloped, and beautifully framed by trees.
Inland climate – more sheltered and temperate than links courses. Summer brings lush fairways and bright skies; autumn colours are spectacular. Rarely too windy.
