ack’s Point takes its name from Jack Tewa, a local figure who rescued a fellow traveller from drowning in Lake Wakatipu in 1862. The land itself – an ancient glacial valley beneath the Remarkables range – first caught the attention of Sir Bob Charles and architect John Darby in the early 2000s. Construction began in 2006 and the course opened in 2008.
The routing builds like a piece of theatre. A steady climb through the early holes leads to the elevated green at the par-5 5th and the course’s first full reveal of Lake Wakatipu. From there it drops steeply to a lakeside 6th and a drop-shot par-3 7th, before working back through a central plateau of ravines and a sharp final descent into the valley. The mile-high Remarkables stay in view for almost the entire round.

Caddy guide
Traditional caddie service is not standard at Jack’s Point.
Buggies
Buggies recommended given the significant elevation change across the round
Handicappers guide
The severe elevation changes reward controlled trajectory over raw power; firm, fast greens punish anything loose.
Respect the drops rather than fight them; positioning matters more than distance on the closing stretch.
Generous width in the valley holes keeps the round enjoyable even with the terrain underfoot.
Course Info
Green speed
Fast and firm
Wind
Can be strong, particularly on the exposed front nine; alpine valley conditions rather than coastal
Pace of play
Well managed
Nerves on the first tee
Builds gradually – the early holes climb steadily toward the big reveal at the 5th rather than opening with drama
Clubhouse
Modern clubhouse with alpine views and on-site dining.
Signature holes
The par-5 5th, climbing to an elevated green for the course’s first look at Lake Wakatipu. The lakeside 6th and drop-shot par-3 7th follow immediately after.
Weather
Four-season alpine climate. Summer (November–March) is the most reliable window; conditions can shift within a single round. A genuine contrast to coastal links golf.
