Gullane No. 3 may be the shortest of the three courses, but it’s also the most deceptive – and arguably the most enjoyable. Designed in 1910 by Willie Park Jr., it uses the same elevated hilltop terrain as its bigger siblings, delivering the same sweeping views across the Firth of Forth and the East Lothian countryside. The course plays firm and fast, with narrow fairways, small undulating greens, and deep revetted bunkers that punish wayward shots. It’s not about length – it’s about accuracy and touch. The par-3s are excellent, especially the 4th and 11th, which demand crisp iron play and thoughtful club selection. Don’t expect an easy ride just because of the scorecard – swirling winds and elevation changes create plenty of challenge. No. 3 is also quieter than the other two Gullane courses, making it a great option for a relaxing but rewarding round. Ideal as a second 18 or for golfers who appreciate subtlety over muscle. Pure links, without the hype.

Play it like a links pitch-and-putt – expect wedges and short irons, but demand precision. It’s a fantastic test of scoring skills and distance control.

The 4th is a par-3 with a raised green perched over the sea, demanding a pure strike. The 14th is a short but tricky par-4 with bunkers tight to the green. The 18th brings you home over rippling ground with the town in view.

Dry and breezy as expected in East Lothian. The short layout remains playable even in wind. Gorgeous light in the morning and early evening.
