Gullane - No. 2 Course

A classic links that shares the same majestic terrain as No. 1. Shorter, more subtle, and equally scenic – No. 2 is a true hidden gem.

Gullane No. 2 was laid out in 1898 by the legendary Willie Park Jr., and it remains one of the best “second courses” in the world. While shorter and slightly less heralded than its big brother, No. 2 shares the same dramatic elevation, coastal views, and firm, links turf. The course climbs Gullane Hill early, offering stunning panoramas over the Firth of Forth, before dropping into the valley and weaving through heather, gorse, and gentle undulations. It’s a thinking player’s course – less about distance, more about placement. The greens are small and well-defended, and the wind makes club selection a constant challenge. The par-4 11th is a standout – a risk-reward hole with a narrow green that demands precision. It’s a fun, fast-running course that rewards creativity and feel. For many, it’s more enjoyable and varied than No. 1 – and always less crowded. If you’re looking for a high-quality links experience with a more relaxed vibe, Gullane No. 2 delivers.

Take advantage of scorable holes – but don’t underestimate the wind or the need for precision. The small greens reward quality iron play and creativity.

A fair but testing round. Play for position off the tee and avoid being too aggressive on second shots. Enjoy the landscape – it’s part of the magic here.

One of the best courses in Scotland for higher handicaps. Play short tees, keep it straight, and you’ll find No. 2 scenic, forgiving, and full of memorable moments.

Green speed

9 – true, quick, but fair given exposed conditions

Wind

Always a factor. Exposed from multiple directions due to elevation. Prevailing winds are westerly or northwesterly.

Pace of play

Excellent – less traffic than No. 1. Relaxed yet professional pace

Nerves on the first tee

Light – friendly starting hole, and a quieter atmosphere makes for an easy beginning

Clubhouse

Same shared clubhouse with No. 1 and No. 3 – elegant, spacious, and beautifully situated

The 11th is a short par-4 with a narrow, sloping green and a real decision off the tee. The 7th is a brilliant downhill par-3 with a tricky crosswind. The 17th plays back up toward the clubhouse with bunkers guarding both sides.

Dry and breezy – classic East Lothian microclimate. Firm turf and excellent drainage make it playable year-round. Mornings tend to be calmest; afternoon winds often add challenge.
