Dunbar is links golf in its most elemental form. Laid out along the East Lothian coastline, the course runs straight out beside the sea before turning back inland, fully exposed to whatever the North Sea chooses to deliver that day.
There is little shelter and no softness. Fairways are firm and often narrow, greens are compact and well defended, and bunkers punish hesitation rather than recklessness. Shot-making is central. Low flights, controlled shapes and intelligent use of the ground define good scoring.
The opening stretch along the water is visually arresting and mentally demanding. The return holes, played into the prevailing wind, test stamina and discipline. Dunbar never feels unfair, but it is relentlessly honest. Every mistake is earned.
It is a course that rewards clarity of thought and respect for conditions.

Handicappers guide
A superb test of ball flight and restraint. Accept conservative targets and trust your ability to control trajectory in the wind.
Club selection is critical. Take less club, keep the ball down and prioritise position over distance.
Play conservatively and stay short of trouble. Wind and uneven lies can escalate scores quickly, but the course remains playable with patience.
