Balcomie Links at Crail is a throwback to golf’s roots. Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895, the course blends quirky charm with stunning views over the North Sea. It’s short by modern standards, but don’t let the yardage fool you – swirling winds, small greens, and coastal exposure make this a serious test of accuracy and imagination. The routing is old-school: several blind shots, shared fairways, and greens tucked beside rocky shorelines. The par-3 5th, played over a beach, is one of the most unique holes in Scotland. The 13th is a brilliant par-4 with a dogleg left along the clifftop. Balcomie rewards the clever golfer – bump-and-run shots, wind-reading, and sensible club choice are far more valuable than brute force. The turf is springy, and the ball runs forever on dry days. Every hole feels like an adventure. The vibe is friendly and traditional, with a cosy clubhouse and welcoming members. It’s not championship golf – it’s something better: fun, fast, and unforgettable.

Play it like a classic links – bump it low, avoid short-siding, and enjoy the chance to go under par. Precision trumps length. Use the wind as a tool, not an enemy.

Don’t chase score – play smart off the tee and stay below the hole. Greens are small and tricky. Use a hybrid or putter from off the green when you can.

A perfect course to enjoy – forgiving off the tee and full of character. Keep your ball in play and relish the unique seaside views. This is golf at its most joyful.

Green speed

8.5 – slightly slower due to exposed conditions, but fair and true

Wind

Almost always in play. Prevailing easterly wind off the North Sea affects every shot

Pace of play

Excellent – quick rounds and friendly rhythm

Nerves on the first tee

No grandstands or pressure – just fresh sea air and a traditional first tee by the sea

Clubhouse

Small, traditional, warm – with sea views and good food

The 5th is iconic – a short par 3 played over the beach. The 13th is a classic clifftop par 4 with a blind tee shot and epic second. The 14th hugs the sea, and the 3rd is a long par 4 with a green set tight against the rocks.

Exposed to sea winds and quick-changing weather. Mornings are calmest. Summer brings bright skies and firm turf, but always pack for wind and showers.
