Tucked in the pine-covered hills above Sotogrande, Almenara Golf Club is a refreshing counterpoint to the region’s more intense championship venues. Originally designed by Dave Thomas, it offers 27 holes arranged into three loops – Lagos, Alcornoques, and Pinos – each with its own identity but sharing the same peaceful, natural setting. Expect dramatic elevation changes, serene lakes, and generous fairways bordered by cork oaks and wild vegetation. While it’s not as punishing as Valderrama or Finca Cortesin, Almenara still requires good course management, especially with uphill approaches and downhill tee shots that tempt overconfidence. A 2021 renovation by Manuel Piñero upgraded bunkering, greens, and infrastructure, bringing a polished, modern resort feel. This is relaxed, enjoyable golf with visual flair and a sense of escape. It’s also part of SO/ Sotogrande, one of the region’s most luxurious lifestyle resorts – making it a favourite for holiday golf without sacrificing quality.
