The Island is one of Ireland’s most visually striking links – a course routed across a narrow peninsula surrounded by the Irish Sea, Broadmeadow Estuary and Malahide Estuary. For much of the round, water glimmers in the distance, giving a true sense of playing on the edge of the land.

Originally laid out in 1890 and extensively redesigned in recent decades, The Island blends classic links traits with modern shaping. Towering dunes, natural ridges and rolling fairways create constant movement. Tee shots demand commitment, while approaches often play to elevated greens guarded by run-offs and revetted bunkers.

The routing builds beautifully. The outward nine introduces the terrain; the inward nine raises the drama, with several holes playing directly into or along the wind. When conditions are calm, scoring is possible. When the breeze rises, it becomes a searching test.

The Island feels adventurous, scenic and distinctly Irish – a links that stays in the memory.

Buggies

Limited and weather dependent

A strong strategic test. Take on bold lines when conditions suit, but respect the wind. Creative shot-making around the greens is rewarded.

Prioritise placement from the tee. Avoid bunkers and trust conservative targets into greens. Smart misses matter here.

Playable but demanding in wind. Choose control over distance and focus on advancing the ball sensibly. Enjoy the scenery and stay patient.
