Located just west of Portrush on Northern Ireland’s north coast, Castlerock’s Mussenden Course is a superb example of traditional links golf, often overlooked due to its high-profile neighbours. Designed originally by Ben Sayers in 1901 and refined by Harry Colt and Martin Hawtree, it weaves through rolling dunes, undulating fairways, and native fescue with beautiful rhythm. Holes are framed by natural landforms and set against the backdrop of the River Bann and Donegal hills. The front nine offers early scoring opportunities, while the back nine – especially from the 13th onwards – presents more rugged challenges. The par-3 4th (“Leg o’ Mutton”) is iconic: 200+ yards over a railway line with OB left and a burn right. Fairways are firm and bouncy, greens are fast and true, and there’s rarely a flat lie to be found. The atmosphere is welcoming, the views impressive, and the wind ever-present. Castlerock doesn’t chase spectacle – it delivers substance. For players who love authentic, playable links with a local soul, this is a must.

Caddy guide

Recommended – for wind judgment, links bounce, and local charm

Buggies

Limited availability – advance request required; walking preferred

Use the wind to your advantage. Shaping shots, smart bounce control, and creative short game are all required to score. Know your miss – the wrong side of the hole brings double bogey fast.

Stay conservative with club selection, especially off the tee. Get your ball in play, and enjoy the wide fairways and smooth greens. Don’t get greedy when the breeze picks up.

Playable and enjoyable. Use the forward tees, avoid the gorse, and swing freely. This is one of the more forgiving true links layouts – and one of the most memorable.

Green speed

9 – true, fast, but fair even in wind

Wind

A constant presence from the Atlantic – can be mild or brutal. Often west/southwest. Club selection needs constant adjustment.

Pace of play

Excellent – well run with traditional links flow

Nerves on the first tee

Low – friendly club atmosphere with a wide opener and relaxed start

Clubhouse

Classic and welcoming – great views, hearty food, and local banter

The 4th (“Leg o’ Mutton”) is a legendary par-3 across a burn and railway. The 17th, a dogleg par-4 through dunes, requires a shaped tee shot and bold approach. The closing hole sweeps uphill toward the clubhouse, with the river and dunes in view.

Exposed coastal conditions – expect wind, firm turf, and occasional rain showers. Generally playable year-round. Spring and summer give the best bounce and light.
