The Dirleton Course is the more traditional of Archerfield’s two layouts. With fewer trees and more exposure to the wind, it plays closer to a classic links – firm, fast-running, and full of subtle slopes and natural contours. While Fidra is about style and serenity, Dirleton is about strategy and shotmaking. The fairways are tighter, the bunkers deeper, and the green complexes more demanding. Approach play needs precision, especially into sloping, well-defended greens. The par-3 3rd is a standout early challenge, while the long par-5 9th and tough closing stretch add teeth to the round. It’s a course that grows on you with every hole. Conditioning is immaculate, as you’d expect from Archerfield, and the experience is private and peaceful. While not quite as visually dramatic as some coastal courses, Dirleton delivers in feel – fast turf, smart design, and a proper test of all departments. It’s a favourite for low-handicap players and those who enjoy the classic values of links golf, refined through a modern lens.

Ideal for shaping shots and controlling spin. The ground game is vital – run-ups often better than aerial shots. A strong wind test that rewards patience.
More demanding than Fidra, but fair. Keep it in play off the tee and favour safe lines into greens. Use the contours – they can help or hurt depending on your plan.
Playable if you stay strategic. Forward tees ease the length. Use the practice facilities beforehand – this is a proper test. Focus on position over power.
10 – tour-standard, firm and fast
More exposed than Fidra. Wind typically from the west – can be strong in afternoons
Excellent – private tee times, low density of play, professional management
Low-key, but the opening drive sets the tone. Private setting, but expect early challenge
Same luxury clubhouse as Fidra – world-class facilities, quiet and exclusive
The 3rd is a long par-3 over a sea of rough to a raised green. The 9th is a true three-shotter, playing uphill to a guarded green. The 18th finishes in full view of the Archerfield House, with bunkers framing the fairway perfectly.
East Lothian delivers again – dry, firm, and breezy conditions dominate. Summer brings fast fairways and clear skies. Spring and autumn rounds often offer the best balance of challenge and scenery.
