Oitavos Dunes is a rare blend – a true links-style course in Southern Europe. Located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, just west of Lisbon, it weaves through pine forest, sandy dunes, and open coastal land with views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra Mountains throughout. Designed by Arthur Hills in 2001, it’s ranked among Europe’s top 100 and feels more like Ireland or Scotland than the Algarve. The course flows naturally over undulating terrain, with minimal earth moved and ecology preserved. Fairways are wide but wind-exposed, greens are firm and contoured, and bunkers sit deep in native sand. The coastal stretch – especially holes 11 through 14 – offers panoramic ocean views and stiff breezes. The par-3 14th plays directly along the shoreline and feels like Pebble Beach in Portugal. This is thinking golf – a place for shaping shots, judging wind, and embracing the elements. Conditioning is excellent, the setting is raw and dramatic, and the course character unforgettable.

Control trajectory and shape. The wind changes everything – club selection is vital. Play bump-and-run when possible. Greens are tricky but fair. Avoid short-siding at all costs.
Focus on centre-green targets and club up in the wind. Keep tee shots low and play for position rather than distance. Let the ground game work in your favour.
It’s playable with the right mindset. Use the fairway width and don’t fight the wind. Take extra club, aim wide, and enjoy the views. Don’t chase score – chase experience.
10 – firm and true, balanced for wind conditions
A constant factor – often from the north or west. Stronger in the afternoon. Coastal stretch is fully exposed
Well managed – spaced tee times and experienced marshals
Low – a relaxed resort start with generous fairway and casual atmosphere
Minimalist and modern – full glass frontage with Atlantic views
The 14th is iconic – a par-3 playing along the cliff edge with wind and ocean backdrop. The 11th is a brilliant par-5 with multiple angles. The 18th, a strong dogleg par-4, closes the round with a view to the mountains and coast.
Mild, breezy, and coastal. Spring and autumn are stunning – golden light and firm turf. Summer sees steady wind and dry heat. Winter is playable with some rain but mild temperatures.
