Old Head Golf Links is one of the most dramatic and photogenic golf courses on the planet. Set on a narrow headland jutting over two miles into the Atlantic, every hole is shaped by sea cliffs, crashing waves, and panoramic skies. The course opened in 1997, designed by a team including Ron Kirby, Paddy Merrigan, and Joe Carr. What they created is part golf, part theatre. Holes run perilously close to 300-foot cliffs, especially on the par-3s and par-5s. The 4th and 12th hug the edge of the world, while the 17th demands a daring drive over the ocean. Fairways are generous, but mis-hits are punished by steep drop-offs or thick rough. Greens are large and undulating, often exposed to swirling sea winds. It’s a bold, unforgettable experience – best enjoyed without worrying about the score. The course is walking-only, with a caddy adding massive value. Conditioning is immaculate, service is five-star, and the entire setting feels like a cinematic epic. It’s not traditional links, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime round for anyone who loves beauty, scale, and drama.

Caddy guide

Highly recommended – essential for wind management, cliff-edge lines, and storytelling

Buggies

Not permitted – walking only

Club down for control. Wind and cliff edges demand total shot commitment. Focus on trajectory and spin management – this is more about precision than power.

Stay on the fairway – rough and cliffs are unforgiving. Use your caddy’s advice and enjoy the ride. This is a course where memories matter more than numbers.

A dream round, even if the score is tough. Forward tees make it playable. Bring extra balls, keep the ball in play, and soak up the views – you’ll never forget it.

Green speed

10 – smooth, firm, and occasionally windswept

Wind

Constant factor. Often blows hard from the west. Expect to club up or down by 2–3 clubs. Adds to the drama.

Pace of play

Relaxed – longer round due to walking and photo stops, but well managed

Nerves on the first tee

Moderate – friendly start with views over the ocean. Beauty softens the pressure.

Clubhouse

Luxury. Glass-walled lounge, fine dining, spa, and service of the highest calibre

The 4th is a clifftop par-4 with a narrow fairway hugging the edge. The 12th is a terrifying par-5 with water and cliffs left the entire way. The 17th is a short par-4 that tempts you to drive the green over a deep ocean cove – one of the most thrilling shots in Ireland.

Wild and changeable. Expect sun, fog, wind, and rain in one loop. Best months are May to early September. Always pack for a gale.
