Waterville is one of the world’s most soulful golf experiences – a graceful, windswept links resting where the River Inny meets the Atlantic Ocean in County Kerry. Founded in the 1880s and redesigned by Eddie Hackett and later Tom Fazio, it offers a blend of natural beauty, strategic depth, and spiritual calm that few courses can match. The routing flows through gentle dunes and along sea cliffs, with dramatic ocean views from almost every hole. The course builds beautifully – early holes play through rumpled linksland, then rise toward the sea. The 11th (“Tranquility”) is a meditative par-5 framed by dunes and sky, while the 17th (“Mulcahy’s Peak”) is a breathtaking par-3 dropping from height toward the surf. Waterville is demanding in wind but never brutal – it rewards control, imagination, and rhythm. The fairways are generous, the greens subtle, and the bunkers deep and smartly placed. It’s a course of nuance, not intimidation. Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara, and Payne Stewart all trained here before The Open – and their spirits still echo in the silence. A round here isn’t just golf – it’s poetry on turf.

The 17th (“Mulcahy’s Peak”) is a dramatic par-3 over a valley with ocean beyond. The 11th is a long, serene par-5 that captures the soul of the place. The 16th is a sweeping par-4 along the sea, with wind often dictating club choice.

Atlantic coast exposure means shifting skies and consistent wind. Summer is best for light and dry turf, though mist and breeze can visit at any time. Always come prepared.
