The Old Course at Ballybunion is a wild, majestic links set on the remote west coast of County Kerry. First opened in 1893 and later refined by Tom Simpson, it’s long been one of the most respected courses in the world – praised by legends like Tom Watson, who famously prepared here for his Open victories. From the opening tee shot along a graveyard wall to the final climb toward the Atlantic, Ballybunion is pure drama. The front nine is exposed, firm, and deceptively strategic. The back nine elevates things – literally – rising into massive dunes with blind shots, cliffside fairways, and small perched greens. The 11th is a terrifying par-4 that drops toward the ocean, while the 15th plays through a towering dune corridor. The turf is lightning-fast, the rough brutal, and the bunkers deep. The wind never stops, and the green complexes demand touch and vision. It’s a brutal test when the breeze is up – but every step feels like a pilgrimage. This is Irish links golf in its most unforgettable form.

Caddy guide

Essential – complex routing, blind shots, and fierce greens all benefit from local knowledge

Buggies

Not permitted

Keep the ball low, favour the fat side of greens, and respect the short par-4s – they bite back. Mental focus matters more than power.

Play it safe and avoid being tempted by hero shots. Use irons off the tee where needed and be ready for unpredictable bounces in the dunes.

Tough, but unforgettable. Use forward tees, play cautiously, and take extra balls. Score is secondary – the experience is everything.

Green speed

9 – firm and fast, but fair even in wind

Wind

Usually strong from the west – a dominant feature that changes the strategy completely. Expect club swings of 2–3 on many holes.

Pace of play

Good – traditional links flow, with caddies helping keep pace

Nerves on the first tee

High – iconic start over a graveyard wall with history watching

Clubhouse

Classic and understated – steeped in tradition with a warm Kerry welcome

The 11th is a stunning par-4 that drops toward the ocean with a small, tucked green. The 15th plays between high dunes with a tight landing zone. The 1st hole, with the cemetery right off the tee, sets the tone immediately.

Wild and unpredictable. Frequent wind, rain, and sun in the same round. Summer offers long days and best conditions. Pack layers and prepare for a proper battle.
