The Strand Course at Portstewart Golf Club is one of Ireland’s great modern links – wild, undulating, and unforgettable. Redesigned in 1992 by Des Giffin, the layout punches through gigantic dunes along the Atlantic coast, overlooking the River Bann and Donegal hills beyond. The front nine is nothing short of breathtaking – a dramatic procession of rollercoaster fairways, elevated tees, and tight landing areas carved through towering dune corridors. The 1st hole alone – a downhill par-4 with panoramic views – is a contender for the best opening hole in Irish golf. While the front nine steals the headlines, the back nine plays over more open terrain with equally strong hole design and a few more birdie chances. The greens are firm, slick, and often perched, requiring touch and control. With wind a near-constant factor, it’s a test of nerve and creativity. The course hosted the 2017 Irish Open, where Jon Rahm claimed victory with a stunning 24-under par, cementing its status among Europe’s elite. It’s less famous than its neighbours, but every bit as thrilling – and arguably more spectacular.

Caddy guide

Recommended – particularly for navigating the massive dunes and blind drives

Buggies

Not permitted

Driver must be on – tight corridors and elevated tees make accuracy vital. Control spin into firm greens and commit on mid-length par-3s. Shot-shaping is essential.

Play smart – club down off the tee when needed, and favour the wide side of greens. Expect the front nine to be tough and the back to offer chances.

Forward tees make it playable, but it’s still a beast. Focus on position and enjoy the jaw-dropping scenery. One of the most photogenic rounds you’ll ever play.

Green speed

10 – quick, firm, and with subtle runoffs

Wind

Often strong from the Atlantic – front nine particularly exposed and swirling through the dunes

Pace of play

Good – well spaced tee times, though front nine can slow due to difficulty

Nerves on the first tee

High – one of the most photographed opening tees in the world. Wide fairway helps settle you, but the view alone gets the heart racing.

Clubhouse

Modern and spacious – panoramic lounge overlooking the dunes and River Bann

The 1st is legendary – a downhill par-4 with a backdrop that stuns. The 5th is a winding par-5 through a dune corridor, and the 13th plays straight toward the ocean with a green perched on a plateau.

Exposed to Atlantic fronts. Summer often brings wind, mist, and occasional sun in rapid succession. Expect dramatic skies and fast-running turf – pack layers.
