Machrihanish is the definition of a pilgrimage course – tucked away on the Kintyre Peninsula, accessible only by ferry or long drive, and absolutely worth the journey. Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1879, the Old Course is a windswept, natural layout that feels untouched by time. The famous 1st hole requires a tee shot over the Atlantic – a thrilling start that sets the tone for what’s to come. The course then meanders through rugged dunes, undulating fairways, and tightly protected greens. There’s a wildness here – no manicured luxury, just authentic links ground that’s shaped by nature and hardened by wind. Every hole is different, and most are exposed to coastal gales that change by the hour. The stretch from holes 4 to 10 is particularly brilliant, with rolling terrain and incredible views across to Islay and Jura. It’s not long, but don’t expect to overpower it – this is a course that rewards patience, creativity, and an open heart. It’s golf as it was meant to be.

Control flight and shape – especially off the tee. Firm turf and crosswinds demand imagination. Embrace the old-school test and enjoy the challenge.
Stay within your game. Avoid being aggressive into small greens and aim to miss in the right spots. Keep the ball low and let it run.
More forgiving than it first appears. Wide fairways and short yardage help. Take in the views, don’t chase score, and enjoy an unforgettable setting.
8.5 – naturally firm and a little slower due to coastal exposure
A constant presence. Prevailing winds from the west or southwest. Expect major variation during your round.
Relaxed – traditional atmosphere and respectful play keep rounds moving
Iconic. The shot over the beach is one of golf’s most intimidating – and thrilling – openers
Magnificent new clubhouse was recently built gives spectacular views over the Atlantic and the course.
The 1st is world-famous – over the sea to a fairway framed by dunes. The 5th and 10th offer sweeping views and dramatic undulations. The 13th, “Pulpit,” plays from an elevated tee with panoramic views, demanding a precise landing into a hidden valley. Special mention to the par 3 15th – The Hut where our very own Managing Director Graeme got a hole in one.
Wild and unpredictable. You can get all four seasons in one round. Best conditions come in May–June and early September. The sea light is extraordinary – as are the sunsets.
