Turnberry’s Ailsa Course is one of the world’s great golfing experiences – a majestic links routed along the windswept cliffs of the Firth of Clyde. It hosted four Open Championships, including the iconic 1977 “Duel in the Sun” between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. After a major redesign by Martin Ebert in 2016, the course was reborn – fiercer, more dramatic, yet still respectful of its storied past. The opening holes ease you in, but from the 4th onwards, you’re in the elements. The stretch from 9 to 11 is among the finest in golf, climaxing at the par-3 9th, which now plays across the cliffs to a green near the iconic lighthouse. The course then winds back through dune land, featuring deep bunkers, bold green complexes, and ever-present coastal wind. The 18th is a beautiful but punishing closer. Visually jaw-dropping, immaculately conditioned, and dramatically improved – the Ailsa is a must-play pilgrimage for serious golfers. Expect emotion, elevation, and epic shot-making. Take a caddie – it elevates the experience completely.

A stern but rewarding test. Take on the angles when conditions allow, but miss in the right spots – especially on elevated greens. Focus intensifies after the 8th.
Don’t be intimidated by the yardage – play smart and avoid hero shots. Club selection is everything in the wind. Enjoy the views and play to safe zones.
Play forward tees and take in the grandeur. Focus on getting through the dramatic middle stretch with minimal damage. Caddies are extremely helpful for clubbing and calm.
9.5 – quick but fair for a coastal championship layout
Coastal exposure makes wind a key factor. Prevailing southwesterly breeze. Stronger in afternoon.
Very well managed – caddie-led pace keeps rounds moving despite challenge
Grand setting, quiet intensity – you’re playing a true Open course, and it feels like it
Luxury-level – full-service, elegant, with ocean and lighthouse views
The par-3 9th is a showstopper – across cliffs to a green perched beside the lighthouse. The 10th and 11th hug the coastline and require pinpoint tee shots. The 18th is a sweeping par-4 with a green framed by bunkers and sea.
West coast brings more rain than Fife but delivers stunning sunsets and fast-changing conditions. Summer offers long light and warm breezes. Bring waterproofs and patience – the wind and mist are part of the drama.
