Playing the Course

Western Gailes is a highly traditional Scottish private members club renowned for the exceptional condition of its undulating links and friendly clubhouse where our visitors are ‘members for the day’.

Unlike many links courses where the sea is almost completely hidden by massive dunes, or where the course itself is a long way from the sea, at Western Gailes you’re always aware of its presence and natural beauty, no more so than on the marvellous stretch of holes from the 5th to the 13th.

Greats from the second half of the 20th century such as Gary Player, Tom Watson and Tony Jacklin have visited Western Gailes.

In modern times, Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson have also tested their mettle over this classic links course.

The course is situated between the railway and the sea, like many classic Ayrshire links courses. It’s also special in having its clubhouse in a more or less central position leaving seven holes to the north and eleven to the south.

The course puts no more emphasis on length than it does on the delicate approach shot or the well-struck medium or long-iron, but all these skills are seriously examined during a round at Western Gailes.

Perhaps that is why, combined with its beautiful setting and warm welcome, it’s captivated so many golfers for so long.
