Playing the Course
Los Naranjos is a typical Robert Trent Jones Sr. design with generous fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The greens, with Penn A4-grass, are spacious and slightly undulated.
Since the opening in 1977, Los Naranjos has been the host of several major competitions, including the Spanish Open, and is ranked one of the best golf courses in Spain. In 2005 and again in 2008 Los Naranjos was voted Course of the Year on the Costa del Sol.
Many prestigious tournaments, both professional and amateur, have been held at Los Naranjos over the years.
In 1988 The Marbella Ladies Open, part of the European Ladies Tour, was played with Laurette Maritz from South Africa winning with a score of 283.
In 1989 the Spanish PGA Championship was played with José Rivero and Severiano Ballesteros on 278 strokes. Rivero won the Championship at the first hole of the sudden death playoff.
Other important championships played at Los Naranjos include the European Senior Amateur Championship, the Spanish Junior Championship and the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship.
